250W Metal Halide Lamp — MP250W/ED90/C/U/4K/E40 (Coated, Europe)

Genuine 250W coated metal halide replacement lamp for E40 commercial and industrial fixtures.

The Plusrite MP250W is a coated, protected metal halide (HID) lamp built for direct replacement in existing 250W metal halide fixtures with an E40 mogul screw base. It delivers 19,500 initial lumens of 4200K daylight-white light with a rated life of 15,000 hours, making it a reliable, cost-effective option for warehouses, sports facilities, factories, area lighting and commercial floodlights still running HID systems.

The coated bulb softens light output and reduces glare compared to the equivalent clear lamp.

Why choose the Plusrite 250W coated metal halide

  • Genuine HID replacement. Direct fit for any 250W metal halide fixture using an E40 base and ED90 bulb shape. No fixture modification required.
  • 15,000-hour rated life. Long service interval reduces relamping costs and downtime.
  • 4200K daylight white. Neutral colour temperature suited to commercial and industrial work environments.
  • 19,500 initial lumens / 16,500 mean lumens. High output ideal for high-bay, area and floodlight applications.
  • Coated bulb. Diffuses light and reduces glare compared to the clear-bulb equivalent.
  • Universal burn position. Mount horizontally, vertically or any orientation between.
  • Designed for open and enclosed luminaires. Versatile across a wide range of fixture types.

Where the 250W metal halide lamp is used

The 250W coated metal halide remains a workhorse in legacy lighting installations across Australia. Common applications include:

Industrial high-bay lighting. Warehouses, factories, distribution centres and manufacturing facilities with existing HID high-bay fixtures.

Commercial floodlights. Building exteriors, car parks, loading areas and perimeter floodlight fixtures designed around 250W HID lamps.

Sports and recreation lighting. Tennis courts, netball courts, training fields, indoor courts and other facilities with 250W metal halide floodlight installations.

Area and street lighting. Older municipal area lights, street lights and roadway luminaires that have not yet been converted to LED.

Architectural and feature lighting. Wall-wash and feature floodlights where 4200K daylight-white output is specified.

If you’re maintaining an existing HID system and need a like-for-like replacement, this lamp is the correct fit. If you’re considering a full conversion to LED, see our LED flood light range for modern, energy-efficient alternatives.

Coated vs clear: which one do you need?

Plusrite stocks both coated and clear versions of the 250W ED90 E40 metal halide:

Feature Coated (this product) Clear
Plusrite code MHEU/0017 MHEU/0009
Initial lumens 19,500 lm 21,500 lm
Lumens per watt 78 lm/W 86 lm/W
Mean lumens 16,500 lm 17,500 lm
Glare Reduced (diffused) Higher (point source)
Best for Open fixtures, areas where staff or public will see the lamp directly Reflector-based fixtures where the reflector controls beam shaping

The coated lamp is the safer default for most installations because it reduces the harsh point-source glare that bare HID lamps produce.

HID vs LED: should you replace the lamp or the fixture?

If your existing 250W metal halide fixture is sound and you only need to replace a burnt-out lamp, this is the most cost-effective option. A direct lamp replacement gets you 15,000 hours of service for under $60 and requires no electrical work.

If multiple lamps in your facility are failing, ballast issues are appearing, or you’re evaluating ongoing energy costs, a full conversion to LED can typically pay back within 2 to 4 years through reduced power consumption (LED equivalents draw around 100–150W vs 250W) and the elimination of relamping cycles. Frequently asked questions

What fixtures is this 250W metal halide lamp compatible with?

Any 250W metal halide fixture using an E40 mogul screw base and accommodating an ED90 (90mm diameter) bulb. This is the standard combination for most 250W commercial and industrial HID floodlights, high-bays and area lights manufactured for the European market.

Will this work with my existing ballast?

Yes, provided your ballast is rated for a 250W metal halide lamp with the matching electrical specifications (130V operating, 2.15A, pulse-start). If your fixture is currently running a 250W metal halide lamp without issue, this is a direct replacement. Probe-start ballasts are not suitable.

What’s the warm-up time?

The lamp reaches 90% of its rated brightness within 2 to 4 minutes of switch-on. This is normal HID behaviour and the reason why metal halide lighting is typically left on for the full operating period rather than being switched on and off frequently.

Why does it take so long to restart after a power interruption?

After a momentary power loss, the lamp needs 10 to 12 minutes to cool before it can re-strike. This is a physical limitation of HID technology — not a fault. For applications that cannot tolerate restart delays, an LED replacement is the better option.

What does “coated” mean and why does it matter?

Coated metal halide lamps have a diffusing coating on the inside of the outer bulb that softens light output and reduces glare. They produce slightly fewer lumens than the clear equivalent (19,500lm vs 21,500lm) but are significantly more comfortable to be near in open fixtures or work environments.

How long will it last?

Rated life is 15,000 hours under normal operating conditions. Actual life depends on switching frequency (frequent on/off cycles shorten lamp life), ballast condition and operating environment. Replace the lamp before it fails completely to avoid ballast strain.

Can I install it myself?

Lamp replacement in an existing HID fixture is a straightforward unscrew-and-replace operation. However, working at height and with high-voltage HID systems carries safety risks. Power off the fixture, allow the existing lamp to cool fully, then replace. For commercial and rooftop installations we recommend a qualified electrician.

What warranty applies?

This lamp comes with a 1-year warranty from invoice date covering manufacturing defects. Failure caused by faulty ballasts, voltage spikes or improper installation is not covered.

Are there any safety considerations?

Yes. Metal halide lamps emit short-wave ultraviolet radiation if the outer envelope is broken or punctured — this can cause skin burn and eye inflammation. Do not use the lamp where people will remain for more than a few minutes unless adequate shielding is in place. End-of-life lamps should be recycled through a licensed lamp recycling service rather than placed in general waste, as metal halide lamps contain small amounts of mercury.
