Commercial lighting design service

At Plusrite, we want to ensure that your lighting installation performs to the illumination, safety and security needs applicable to your space, the environment and user needs.

That’s why we are pleased to offer our expert lighting design service, free of charge for all commercial lighting installations and projects.

What is commercial lighting design?

The lighting design process will determine the recommended lighting type for your application (if not already selected) and features. It will also specify:

  • The number of lighting units and wattages needed for your space
  • Installation heights, spacing and the correct beam angles for the illumination you require
  • The best hardware design to suit the size and specifics of your location

Your finished lighting design (emailed to you) will include a diagram with lighting units strategically positioned to provide the required lighting distribution across your space, accompanied by a quotation from our professional team.

What does commercial lighting design involve?

Commercial lighting design is about ensuring that the right illumination is present where and when it is required, and that it operates and performs to the needs of your business, organisation or client. There are many aspects that we consider and prioritise based on the lighting purpose, size and layout of your location, electrical infrastructure availability and the environment.

Light distribution and beam angles

Commercial environments may require uniform and evenly-distributed light for visibility and safety, direct light for task-specific areas and workstations, accent lighting for highlighting features, landscaping or products, or diffused/ambient light to create a comfortable atmosphere for staff and clients. Or a combination of all of these.

Narrow beam angles of 10°-30° create focused illumination suitable for spotlighting or accent lighting. Medium beam angles provide a broader spread to balance focus and coverage ideal for general lighting; such as in corridors and office spaces. Wide beam angles of 60°-120° spread light over large areas providing even illumination and reducing shadows; suited to ambient lighting, flood lighting or uniform lighting such as in warehouses and hospitals.

The placement and height of your fixtures affects how light is distributed and depending on your commercial lighting design, fixtures with a wider beam angle may be placed higher or further apart compared to those with a narrow beam angle.

Correlated Colour Temperature (CCT)

‘Colour temperature’ in lighting refers to the colour of the light emitted by lighting systems, affecting the appearance and ambience created by the light source. Colour temperatures are measured in the ‘Kelvin’ (K) scale (e.g. 6000K cool white). Lamps that are lower in colour temperature (around 2400K) produce a reddish glow (oranges and yellows), while lamps with a higher CCT (4200K to 5000K) emit more blue, producing a bright white light. This is where the terms ‘warm white’ or ‘cool white’ are used.

Colour Rendering Index (CRI)

CRI (Color Rendering Index) is a measure of the ability of the light source to accurately show colours on a scale from 0 to 100, in comparison to natural sunlight. A higher CRI indicates higher accuracy, critical in applications like retail stores, medical facilities, automotive and for trades such as painters. All Plusrite lighting products feature a high CRI rating as shown in the datasheets for each of our products, accommodating a wide range of commercial and industrial lighting needs.

Ingress Protection (IP) Ratings

An ingress protection rating represents the degree of protection from solid particles (dust) and liquid ingress. The IP is followed by two numbers; the first representing protection against solids and the second against liquids.

Commercial and industrial lighting in Australia should have a minimum rating of IP65, meaning that your lighting units are designed and constructed to perform with adequate protection from severe weather and harsh work environment. The “6” indicates that a lighting unit is dust-tight and the “5” means that its enclosure is water resistant (protected from low-pressure water-jet sprays from every direction).

Impact Resistance (IK) Ratings

An ‘Impact Resistance Rating’ represents the degree of protection against impact, ranging from IK00 (no protection) to IK10. For commercial and industrial lighting in Australia, indoor fixtures in areas prone to damage should have a minimum IK rating of IK07, while outdoor or high-risk areas should have at least IK08 to ensure durability against impacts (this is similar to sustaining the impact of 1.7 kg dropped from 300mm, without damage).

Special features availability

Commercial and industrial lighting products with special features can enhance the usability of your lighting installation and cover multiple purposes, user needs and minimise risk for your business. Features such as dimming, motion sensors, remote monitoring and camera surveillance allow you to adjust brightness, optimise energy usage and enhance security. You can also integrate your lighting with building management systems and implement scheduling and automation, for improved operational efficiency.

During a consultation with one of our friendly commercial lighting experts, we will ask you a range of questions to obtain information on your needs so we can develop the best commercial lighting design for your project. This can be done over the phone (easiest), via email, or in person.
