Sports fields, recreation centres and stadiums wouldn’t be much without high quality sports lighting. Wednesday night mixed netty games, Friday night footy or a casual match of evening tennis with mates – none of these would be possible if it weren’t for sports lighting.
It’s why there’s a set of governing rules on sports lighting in Australia, covered by the recently updated AS2560.2. These rules affect not only large commercial football and cricket ovals, but local clubs and recreation centres, too.
Here, we consult the sports lighting gurus at Plusrite and discuss the amendments in the new-and-improved Australian Standards for lighting in sports fields.
Australian Standard AS 2560.2
Sports lighting requirements in Australia is outlined in Australian Standard AS2560.2. In 2021, these Standards were updated to improve the health and safety of sports players while improving the viewing experiences for spectators.
Which sporting organisations are affected by it?
Almost all sporting clubs are affected by the updated Australian Standards for fields. Tennis, multipurpose indoor sports halls, football (all codes), outdoor netball and basketball, aquatic sports, baseball and softball, outdoor field hockey, and lawn bowls were all previously included in the Australian Standard.
New sports included in AS2560.2
This new standard now also has been expanded into include, cricket, equestrian and squash.
Main components of the Standard
Not only does this new Australian Standard on sports lighting aim to improve public health and safety by providing better-lit sports facilities, but it also improves energy efficiency, too. LED technology is one of the main considerations in the amended AS2560.2. By promoting the switch to LED technology in sports fields across Australia, we’re going to see a huge benefit in reduced energy consumption as well as superior lighting.
