If you manage commercial, industrial, or municipal lighting in Australia, you are likely aware of the impending regulatory changes. The Australian Government is phasing out High Intensity Discharge (HID) lamps, with the final phase-out taking effect on 1 June 2030. This sweeping change covers the metal halide quartz, metal halide ceramic, and high pressure sodium ranges.
These are the heavy-duty lamps that are still lighting thousands of streets, car parks, shopping centres, and sports fields across the country. While the shift toward more energy-efficient technology is inevitable, the 2030 deadline places a significant burden on facility managers and local councils.
Where HID is still at work
Despite the rise of new lighting technologies, HID globes are still incredibly prevalent. You will find them working hard in a variety of Australian sectors:
– Street lighting
– Shopping centres
– Car parks
– Sports lighting
– Industrial and warehouse facilities
Plenty of these installations are nowhere near the end of their operational life. The poles are structurally sound, the luminaires are intact, and the ballasts are functioning perfectly.
Why replace the whole fitting?
When a single globe burns out, the modern trend is often to replace the entire fixture. However, replacing a whole luminaire, pole-top, or floodlight bank just because a globe has failed is not always practical. It requires a significant capital budget, the hiring of access equipment like cherry pickers, and considerable labour hours. For many strata managers, local sports clubs, and warehouse operators, forced early upgrades simply do not fit into the budget.
That is where we come in. Plusrite Australia will continue to stock HID globes, and they remain available to our customers.

Plan on your own timeline
Our mission is to help you keep your existing fittings running. By maintaining your sites with our HID globes and HID ballasts, you can plan your eventual LED upgrade on your own timeline, not the regulator’s.
