Solar Bollards

Solar Bollard Lights

Off-grid driveway, pathway and perimeter bollard lighting in 5W, 7W, 18W and 20W. Built for Australian outdoor conditions, no electrician required.

A bollard light marks an edge — the line between driveway and lawn, between path and garden bed, between car park and pedestrian zone. Done well, it looks integrated into the landscape and runs every night without thought. Done badly, it’s a tripping hazard with a flat battery.

Plusrite stocks a focused range of solar bollard lights designed for Australian outdoor conditions. Every fixture in the range runs on solar with built-in lithium battery storage and dusk-to-dawn switching, so there’s no AC cabling, no electrician, and no ongoing energy cost. Vandal-proof, double-sided, decorative, and remote-controlled options are all available.

Choosing a solar bollard light

The right bollard depends on three things: where you’re using it, how bright you need it, and how exposed the location is.

By application

Residential driveways. Standard 5W to 7W bollards spaced 3 to 5 metres apart along the driveway edge produce enough light to define the edge clearly without overpowering the entrance. The solar driveway light is purpose-built for this.

Pathways and garden paths. 5W bollards at 2 to 3 metre spacing give a soft, decorative wash along walkways. The 5W 6K solar LED bollard is the most popular for residential pathway use.

Commercial entries and car park edges. Step up to 18W or 20W for the brighter, more security-grade output suited to commercial premises. The PLS-B-20W at 1000mm height is a strong choice for commercial entries and customer car park boundaries.

Public reserves, parks and high-traffic areas. Choose vandal-proof bollard lights where damage or tampering is a real risk. The reinforced housing and tamper-resistant fixings significantly extend service life in exposed public areas.

Two-sided pathways. The double-sided solar bollard light throws light from both faces of the bollard — ideal where you want to illuminate both sides of a path or boundary from a single fixture.

By wattage and height

Wattage Typical height Best for
5W ~600–800mm Garden paths, residential edging, decorative use
7W ~800–1000mm Standard residential driveways and walkways
18W 823mm or 1066mm Commercial pathways, body corporate driveways
20W 1000mm Commercial entries, car park boundaries, perimeter lighting

The taller fixtures suit installations where a higher mounting point delivers better beam coverage; the shorter fixtures suit residential applications where the bollard is closer to the path edge.

Why solar bollards instead of mains-powered?

Three reasons, and they apply almost universally to outdoor bollard installations:

Installation cost

Running mains cable to bollards along a driveway typically requires trenching, conduit, electrical sub-circuits and connection by a licensed electrician. For a 30m driveway with 8 to 10 bollards, mains installation can run into thousands of dollars before the lights even arrive. Solar bollards mount mechanically — no cable, no trench, no electrician.

Ongoing energy cost

Mains-powered outdoor lighting runs every night, year-round, often on a timer that doesn’t account for seasonal sunset variation. Solar bollards have zero ongoing electricity cost.

Resilience

Mains-powered bollards die when the power goes out. Solar bollards keep running on stored battery — useful for security, emergency lighting and any application where outage tolerance matters.

The trade-off is that solar bollards depend on adequate sun exposure to charge — typically 6+ hours of direct sun per day. In heavily shaded locations, mains-powered alternatives may be a better fit.

Vandal-proof and harsh environment options

For installations exposed to vandalism, impact damage or harsh coastal conditions, the vandal-proof bollard light is the right pick. It features:

  • Reinforced impact-resistant housing
  • Tamper-resistant fixings
  • Sealed lens cover
  • IP65+ weather rating

Common applications: public parks, school grounds, council reserves, train station platforms, retail centre carparks and any exposed perimeter where standard bollards have a short service life.

Decorative and RGB options

For architectural and feature lighting, the 5W RGB solar bollard with remote control lets you cycle through colours, set static colours, or use the standard white modes. Useful for hotels, function venues, restaurants, residential garden features and any location where lighting is part of the visual experience rather than just functional illumination.

Installation

Plusrite solar bollard lights are designed for fast, electrician-free installation:

  1. Position the bollard with unobstructed sun exposure on the integrated solar panel for at least 6 hours per day.
  2. Install the ground anchor. Most bollards use a screw-in or concrete-anchor base. Concrete footings give the longest service life for taller and commercial-grade bollards.
  3. Tighten the bollard onto the anchor. No wiring required.
  4. Confirm the dusk-to-dawn sensor is unobstructed and verify the fixture activates at sunset.

For commercial and council installations involving multiple bollards, larger pole sizes or formal sign-off requirements, engage a qualified installer.

Frequently asked questions

How long do solar bollard lights last per night?

Most Plusrite solar bollards run for 8 to 12 hours per night on a full daytime charge — comfortably covering an entire Australian night through every season. Larger 18W and 20W fixtures have larger batteries to support their higher output and maintain similar runtime.

Will they work in winter?

Yes. The lithium batteries store enough charge from a full day of winter sun to run the night, and the longer Australian winter nights are well within the runtime envelope of all our bollards. Extended overcast weather (5+ days with minimal sun) may eventually reduce runtime, but normal weather patterns provide enough recovery charge.

Do I need an electrician?

No. Solar bollards have no AC connection — installation is purely mechanical (anchoring the bollard to the ground). For commercial installations involving multiple fixtures and formal sign-off, a qualified installer is recommended for site planning and anchoring.

How far apart should I space them?

For driveways and pathways, 3 to 5 metres between bollards typically gives continuous illumination of the edge. Closer spacing (2 to 3 metres) creates a brighter, more decorative effect. Wider spacing (5 to 8 metres) creates pools of light at the bollards rather than continuous illumination — suitable for marking position rather than illuminating the path.

Are they bright enough for security lighting?

Bollard lights are not designed as primary security lighting — their job is to mark edges and illuminate immediate ground area, not throw light across an entire property. For security lighting, pair bollards with solar flood lights at strategic mounting points.

Can I use them in coastal areas?

Yes. The IP65+ weather rating and corrosion-resistant housing materials are specified for Australian outdoor conditions including coastal salt spray. For directly exposed coastal sites, the vandal-proof model offers the most robust housing.

How long is the warranty?

Three years from the date of purchase when bought direct from Plusrite Australia or an authorised reseller. The warranty covers the LED, solar panel, battery and controller against manufacturing defects.
