The Papua New Guinea Dockyard (PNG Dockyard) is on Motukea Island, a 106-hectare commercial precinct developed by Curtain Bros PNG Ltd located 12 km from the Port Moresby Central Business District in Papua New Guinea.
The PNG Dockyard serves as a road and container terminal servicing local industry as well as business from international trade routes. The mining and energy sectors are key drivers of the local economy (liquefied natural gas, crude petroleum, gold and copper exports) as is the agricultural sector.
As an international seaport and trading gateway, the PNG Dockyard operates 24/7 year-round with sizable facilities to service up to 9 vessels at a time including cargo ships, tankers, and fishing vessels. The shipyard also offers a range of services including hull repairs, engine overhauls, electrical and electronic repairs and painting.
Project Summary
Curtain Bros PNG Ltd required a specialised lighting solution to replace the existing 2000W metal halide lighting at the PNG Dockyard. Metal halide lighting is an older lighting technology, common in industrial areas. See photos of the PNG Dockyard.
The PNG Dockyard is responsible for providing adequate nighttime visibility for its crew, contractors and management for safety, security and efficient operations.
- To maintain clear visibility – to eliminate shadows and keep signage and shipping labels visible
- For accident prevention – so crew can safely operate heavy machinery and handle shipping containers
- For security – for adequate security monitoring and a deterrent for theft/vandalism
- For quality control – aids inspections for damage or defects and prompt identification of issues
- For efficient operations – maintains safe access for traffic and people movement at night
The work surface and internal roads at the PNG Dockyard are sealed, with gravel edges. As this was replacement lighting, there were already existing poles in place, which were 27 metres high. The existing lighting was hard-wired, requiring an electrician for removal and installation of the new lighting.
Products
Plusrite supplied the Pandora Plus 1200W LED Flood Light (x 10 pieces) for installation at the PNG Dockyard. This modern, high-performing industrial lighting supports nighttime operations at expansive locations such as shipping ports where there is high-activity involving heavy machinery, large ships and handling cargo.
- Maximum visibility 1200W – the most powerful of our Pandora range
- IP65 rated for outdoor use – designed and built tough for large open areas exposed to the elements
- Innovative thermal design and protective UV-stabilised powder coated finish – reducing heat and extending lifespan
- Lumileds/Osram/Cree LED chips – high-quality LED tech for optimum efficiency
LED lighting offers higher energy-efficiency than traditional lighting and given the considerable use of lighting at this particular facility, this lighting upgrade will provide significant cost savings over time.
This lighting complies with the minimum standards for outdoor workplace lighting (500 lux). More information on Australian Standards relating to commercial lighting is available here.
Design
Plusrite provided advice and designed a custom solution to suit the existing electrical infrastructure, existing light poles and the lighting requirements of the PNG Dockyard. This included:
- Adjusting the LED driver of the Pandora Plus 1200W LED Flood Light to handle the existing 415 volt 3-phase power (commonly installed with the older 2000W metal halide lighting). This saved a full control panel replacement.
- Providing 30m of new cabling with each light to suit the 27m height of the light poles. This eliminates risks associated with using old cabling.
- Pre-setting a beam angle of 60º degrees which we suggested based on the location and customer requirements.
In this instance the lights were connected to mains power and required to be installed by an electrician with a very high boom lift for height access. This lighting is made to order with a timeframe of 6-8 weeks for delivery.
