Red Hill Auditorium is a large outdoor entertainment venue in Western Australia hosting live music, festivals, theatre and more. It sits in a nature-based setting located 40 minutes from Perth, adjacent to John Forrest National Park.
Due to its remote location and layout, key areas of the precinct are separated by walkways through scenic bushland. The walkways connect the car park and onsite hotel to the entertainment (music) area of the precinct.
The Red Hill Auditorium is responsible for providing adequate visibility for their event attendees and staff to safely utilise the bush walkways. To comply with local laws and regulations for running public events, this lighting must comply with the Australian Standards applicable to walkway lighting.
The walkways are relatively natural, with machinery disturbance only to establish a flat pathway (of sufficient width) for on-foot traffic and management vehicle access. The surface is typical of Australian bush tracks and lined with natural flora and some rubble.
Red Hill Auditorium is a carbon-negative venue and they are independently verified and audited each year, to confirm compliance to this pledge. The client seeks eco-friendly, energy-efficient solutions wherever possible.
The client (Red Hill Auditorium) required a budget-friendly lighting solution to line the bush walkways and safely accommodate the evening crowds moving through the venue. Plusrite supplied LED Solar Bollard Light PLS-B-5W-6K-800 (x200 pieces) for the project.
Plusrite solar bollard lights are a cost-effective and eco-friendly option ideal for outdoor venues to provide safe and ambient lighting for public pathways, commercial driveways, multi-use gardens, alfresco dining areas and more. This product was a nice fit for the physical location and the client was pleasantly surprised that it aligned so well with the operations and environmental principles of the venue.
Plusrite provided advice regarding design (and self-installation) and determined that 200 pieces (with 8-10 metre spacing) would be required to line the length of the walkways and satisfy compliance requirements for illumination. Vandalism was not a concern however we recommended applying self-pour concrete at the base of the bollards during installation, given the soft ground and weather exposure at the site. This secures them well and they can still be moved if the walkways are ever widened.
The client was unaware when they approached us that there were solar products available that could cater to this application. A powered option would have required 800-1000m of underground electrical infrastructure to service the supply of energy, so our client enjoyed significant savings. They also liked the manual on/off feature as it meant that they could turn off the bollards when they shut down over winter (they also get more globe mileage).
