With petrol prices soaring across Australia, the switch to electric vehicles is accelerating. Discover why EV charger sales are booming and download our free guide to answer your charging questions.

As we reach the end of March 2026, countless Australian families are busy packing their bags and buying chocolate eggs for the upcoming Easter long weekend. Normally, the biggest worry is the holiday traffic. This year, however, the sheer cost of filling up the family car is dominating the conversation.

If you have driven past a service station recently, you have likely winced at the pricing boards. Looking at the latest data for Unleaded 91 across the country, average prices are sitting well over 250 cents per litre. In the Northern Territory, the average is an eye-watering 264.3 cents, whilst states like Western Australia, Victoria, Queensland, New South Wales, and South Australia are seeing maximum prices hit a painful 299.9 cents per litre. When it costs that much just to get out of the city limits, it is becoming an incredibly easy choice to sell the gas guzzler and go electric.

The Great Australian Electric Shift

The transition to electric vehicles is no longer just a trend for early adopters; it is a financial necessity for many. Last week, Alex Misoyannis, Deputy News Editor at Drive, highlighted exactly how fast this shift is happening. He reported that search volume for electric vehicles on the Pickles auction website has increased by 111 per cent over the past three weeks compared to the prior period. Furthermore, the motoring group RACV has seen an incredible 190 per cent increase in electric car searches.

Australians are actively looking for ways to bypass the bowser entirely, and the used and new EV markets are heating up as a result.

EV Charger Sales Are Surging

Here at Plusrite Australia, we are seeing this transition firsthand. Over the last couple of weeks, we have experienced a massive jump in EV charger sales. As more drivers finally take the plunge and purchase an electric vehicle, the immediate next step is figuring out how to keep it powered up at home or at the workplace.

Naturally, with this rapid influx of new electric vehicle owners comes a wave of questions. If you have spent your entire life pulling up to a petrol pump, making the switch to plugging in a car in your garage can feel a little daunting. You might be wondering about the difference between charging speeds, what sort of power output your home can handle, or whether you need a smart charger.
